Night View of Siena
Founded by the Etruscans and colonized by ancient Rome, Siena flourished as a republic in the Middle Ages from wool and textile trade. It was one of the major cities of Europe in its day and became a principal center of art and culture as well. Sienas prosperity was ended after devastating bouts with the bubonic plague beginning in 1348 that diminished the citys population from 100,000 to around 30,000. Todays population is around 60,000.
