Assisi Duomo

Basilica di San Francesco (Basilica of St. Francis, Assisi)

This basilica, built in honor of St. Francis, is one of the top pilgrimage sites for Catholics. It was a massive architectural feat, and is considered one of the most outstanding monuments to art and faith of the medieval period in the Western world. It is filled with frescos by Giotto, Cimabue, and Lorenzetti.

St. Francis, born in 1182, founded an order of monks called the Franciscans. Today it is the largest of all Catholic orders. St. Francis is one of the most well known and beloved of the Catholic Church's many saints. He was made patron saint of Italy in 1939.
